Family Reunions
People now live further away from each other because their employers wish them to move or because they seek jobs with better rewards and prospects. Families become spread across the country and often across the world. The opportunities to get together are limited because of time and money.
Successful family reunions are very important. The focus may be on a special occasion such as an important wedding anniversary or birthday.
A history of the family can be a centrepiece of the event providing a common interest for people who sometimes have not met. It can also help identify all family members who should be invited. This was the case with my own family. I had been researching the Drescher family history for several years when a relative offered to arrange a family reunion.
The reunion held in and around Hull in Yorkshire brought together over forty members of the family to meet and visit places of interest in the family's history. Some people travelled hundreds of miles to meet relatives they had never met. Many did not know of each other's existence.
I wrote the family history illustrated with photos of family members and places important to the family such as Hull and the Black Forest in Germany where the family originated. The family reunion was so successful that another is planned in 2007.
Extracts from the family history are provided as a case history.
