Brian Drescher, Owner Manager of English Roots, holds the Higher Certificate in Genealogy awarded by the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies. Studying for this family history qualification provided knowledge and practical experience of British and international genealogy research which has been developed further through working for customers in the UK, the United States, Australia and several other countries. Subjects studied included parish records, censuses, civil registration, medieval records, military and other occupational records. English Roots is in the Heart of England and much of the country is within about two hours drive. It is situated close to the Major Oak where Robin Hood is said to have hidden from the Sheriff of Nottingham's soldiers. The business is based on the historic market town of Southwell where Charles the First spent his last night of freedom before surrendering to the Scottish Parliamentarians in 1646.
Southwell has a cathedral and many fine Georgian houses. Lord Byron lived in one from 1803 to 1809. The town's other claim to fame is as the birthplace of the Bramley apple in the early 1800s.
William Brewster, a postmaster in Scrooby less than 20 miles from Southwell, was one of the Pilgrim Fathers who set up a new society in Plimoth - now modern Plymouth, Massachusetts. He enjoyed a senior position as the ruling elder in the settlement.
